Tips for Your First Trip to Europe
For many Americans, a trip to Europe is considered a “rite of passage’, or something that must be done at least once in their lifetime. Whether you are young or old, anyone will enjoy their visit to this historical land. And as you will soon learn, your first visit to Europe will leave you wanting for more.
Your time there is your first consideration. There is so much to see, if you only have a week or less, try to concentrate your visit on one area or one city. Or, if you have the finances and the time for a longer stay, two weeks or more, you can allow yourself the luxury of touring around to other countries.
Do your research, which parts of Europe do you want to see the most? Like visitors to the United States, you need to choose where you want to go, and what you want to see. There are the main attractions in cities like London, Paris, and Rome. You can do a quick visit to each of these, seeing just the “big” sights, or you can stay in one and become part of that culture. Do you have family roots somewhere in Europe? Try to find where, and visit that part of the country. It’s always a sobering sight to see where your ancestors originated from.
Maybe the many holidays and festivals interest you. Events such as the running of the bulls in Pamplona, Spain, or the Gathering and Highland games in Edinburgh? Maybe art is your thing, and then you should concentrate your trip on the hundreds of museums available there. What ever is your interest, there is something for every mind and soul who visits Europe.
Now, secondly, are you an independent that prefers to tour privately or just with family, or do you want to hire a tour guide for part of or your entire stay? Quite often students will visit Europe during the summer breaks from school. This is a great way to add to your education! As a retired person, visit Europe during the off seasons, stay longer and relax some of your retirement days in a wonderful place.
Considering a tour? For some this can be a great way to see the country, and takes the stress off of trying to learn your own way around. Tours are very common in Europe, and are subject specific. You can sign up for a Garden Tour, where that’s all you will visit, are the many gardens located throughout the hills and cities. Or you can explore just the castles, festivals or large attractions. Maybe two of these would work, and then the remainder of your time there you can try being on your own.
If you are someone not fully comfortable in the group situation, then being the independent visitor to Europe is not difficult. The Internet is full of information that makes is easy to plan a good visit, and will offer you the flexibility you may need.
As you consider a European vacation, be sure you are ready for a life changing experience. It’s like no other place you will ever see. The history there is rich, the people are friendly, and you will come home with a better understanding of the worldwide connection we all strive for.
